Timbavati Game Reserve

Umlani Bushcamp is an authentic African game lodge located in the Timbavati Game Reserve, one of the oldest private nature reserves adjoining the Kruger National Park. Timbavati Game Reserve was formed in the 1950's, when a group of conservation minded private game park owners, on the western boundary of the Kruger National Park, decided to pool their resources for mutual benefit and to benefit the wildlife in the area. The individual farms were consequently joined in order to form a wilderness area that is today privately owned by 48 individual members.

Timbavati Game Reserve is situated on the Western boundary of the Kruger National Park and lies between the Klaserie, Umbabat, Manyeleti and Sabie Sands Reserves. In recent years, the fences separating Timbavati, private game park, from the Kruger National Park were dropped, thus forming a pristine wilderness area of approximately four million hectares.

Umlani Bushcamp works together with other landowners and African game lodge owners in the Timbavati Game Reserve in a mutually beneficial way. This co-operation results in a huge area of more than 10,000 ha of unspoilt wilderness for traversing and walking.

History

Umlani Bushcamp was founded in 1989 by Marco and Marie-Louise Schiess in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve. Umlani was built in the central section of the Timbavati, which is now part of the greater Kruger National Park. Marco and Marie-Louise's wish was to encapsulate their vision of a true African Adventure in the very spirit and experience of the camp itself. They wanted the camp to blend in with nature and as a result, the entire bushcamp was built out of natural materials in a traditional African style.

Umlani bushcamp is managed by Formen Mathebula and Sieglinde Rode (Ziggy) Formen has been with Umlani since 1997 when he started of as a tracker, then a ranger, got promoted to Assistant Manager in 2006 and has now taken over the Management position. Ziggy spend her student year with Umlani in 2003 and has now come back to co-manage the camp. She comes from a conservation background and is fluent in English, German and Afrikaans.  Umlani has become renowned for its unique setting, traditional style, outstanding service and award winning meals.
